
Three Words That Define Us
I remember when Ron and Bev Morrow were creating the logo, and Ron wanted something simple and rational that spoke to the engineer in him. The equilateral triangle inside the regular quadrilateral (square) did that, and the colors black and white were simple, clear, and clean. I don’t think there was more to it than that at the time, but the three sides of the triangle relate to the three words of our motto. It’s accidental but true.
I always thought the motto was a veiled reference to Ben Graham’s book for the layman, “The Intelligent Investor.” But Ron saw “intelligent” as the opposite of “emotional,” which reflects our desire to remove emotion from our investing, hence the motto “Intelligent Investment Management.” The motto expresses what we do and how we do it.
Our clients come to us with three objectives: Don’t lose their money, make it grow, and help them sleep at night in the process. And those objectives line up beautifully with the services we provide. We invest money for our clients; we educate them by sharing ideas, thoughts, conclusions, and information, and we work with each one to help achieve financial independence and peace of mind. We think all three are critical to success.
So our motto of “Intelligent Investment Management” is a shorthand description of what we do.
Intelligent: We act intelligently (not emotionally), we invest intelligently, and we provide our clients with the intelligence (knowledge and information) necessary for peace of mind and financial independence. We share our investment knowledge and observations in person, at seminars, in print, and on videos. Our investment material is available in the Muhlenkamp Memorandum (read past Memos using the link in the navigation) and in the book, Ron’s Road to Wealth.
Investment: We actually invest money for people; we don’t advise, suggest, recommend, publish tips, charge for our newsletter, tout stocks, or act as brokers or custodians. We focus on active money management for our clients.
Management: We help our clients manage their financial affairs, providing resources and services to help with budgeting and saving for college and retirement, reviewing estate plans and IRA beneficiary designations, or just about anything with dollar signs attached to it. We provide the opportunity to work with a Client Service Representative to address your financial questions.
